Below
the wavetrain, the river swings right once again and enters a longish section
of flatwater. There are occasional boils to take advantage of here, but the
best approach to minimize the tedium is to paddle with purpose down to the top
of the next drop, Black Velvet. So named for the velvety-smooth appearance of
this wide, shallow train of rolling waves, there isn't much in the way of play
potential here but your arms will appreciate the break from having to propel
you forward. Most opt to just drift down this rapid and, if needed, get out
and stretch and hydrate.
From here, it's just a short distance to paddle until the Middle Channel meets
up with the Main below Farmer Black's rapid. Hell's Half Mile provides amusement
until the takeout at River Run. Should you decide you just CAN'T bear the
thought of getting off the water just yet, there is one more small rapid just
downstream of River Run known as Muskrat. It's not much of a rapid at low summer
levels - just a small set of waves that winds 180 degrees around a rocky point
to a looooong stretch of flatwater (like, all the way to the city of Ottawa).
There are some reasonably fun eddylines and boils to play with at the very
bottom, but they may not be worth the run down and subsequent carry/paddle back
up to
River Run. |
